High barrier paper pouch launched for nutritional powders

Cincinnati-based ProAmpac, a leading global flexible packaging company, has partnered with Purition, a UK-based powdered meal replacement manufacturer, to provide them with a recyclable packaging solution for its nutritional powders. The solution is a fully recyclable, high-barrier paper pouch to replace the non-recyclable, multi-layered plastic packaging originally used by Purition. The new material developed is called ProActive Recyclable, and while minimising the overall amount of materials used, they did so without compromising the protective characteristics of the product. Also, the ProActive Recyclable paper bag can easily be recycled into normal paper recycling streams. The company says that the unique paper-based technology provides the high oxygen and moisture barrier needed to protect dry powders. The product also benefits from optimal rigidity, ensuring shelf-appearance quality. The pouches are digitally printed, maintaining Purition’s earthy, minimalist colour palette, ensuring clear and accurate labelling for consumers.

High-speed formable PE-based monomaterial film designed for microwave vegetable steaming

Ohio-based ProAmpac has announced the launch of a patent-pending PE-based mono-material film designed for microwave vegetable steaming. The film, known as ProActive Recyclable R-2000S, is designed to run on high-speed form/fill/seal equipment and is pre-qualified for store drop-off recycling. The main technical challenge in developing this solution was said to be engineering a recyclable film that could withstand both cold chain storage and microwave conditions. ProAmpac says that after a series of strategic trials, they managed to engineer a recyclable lamination with ideal stiffness, excellent toughness at low temperatures, and great graphical qualities that allow consumers to microwave in the pack, and which met retailer and brand environmental sustainability commitments. ProAmpac has already launched R-2000F frozen food packaging, R-2000D dry food packaging, and QuadFlex Recyclable for human and pet food applications, to help brand owners achieve their sustainability objectives.

thepackhubs-viewThe number of recyclable mono-material pouch developments continues to accelerate. In-store drop-off remains the main way to deal with the packaging post-use due to a lack of kerbside recycling infrastructure..

Recyclable paper mailer delivers reduced water absorption

Cincinnati-based ProAmpac has announced the launch of the ProActive Recyclable Paper Mailer. Compared to a regular kraft paper mailer, the ProActive Recyclable Paper Mailer has a 70% lower water absorption, ensuring that goods arrive at their destination as intended. The mailers are also suitable for kerbside recycling after use through standard paper recycling streams. The side seam construction gives a less industrial look than traditional centre seamed paper mailers, giving more scope for sleek branded graphics. They can be manufactured with either a single closure option or a dual closure for added security and protection, along with an easy-open feature to ensure items arrive without having been tampered with. They can also be fitted with a base gusset to allow more space for bulkier items. The ProActive Recyclable Paper Mailer is currently available online in three stock sizes.

PE-based pouch material created to replace multi-material laminate structures

Flexible packaging supplier ProAmpac, based in Cincinnati USA, has announced the launch of a new PE-based (polyethylene) material, designed to replace multi-material laminate structures. The patent-pending material, called R-2000D, is the latest material to be developed as part of ProAmpac’s ProActive Sustainability range. It is available in standard, high barrier and ultra-high barrier options. The standard and high barrier variants have been tested and approved for supermarket PE drop-off recycling. R-2000D is said to have excellent stiffness and dimpling resistance, high drop resistance, and very high clarity. It also has excellent directional tear without the need for laser scoring. R2100D is also available and has an increased level of toughness for sharper products, such as nuts, pretzels and pet treats. R-2000D’s multilayer structure means that it can compete with conventional laminates at line speeds, while also having a wide operating window. Biodegradable mailing bag is made from innovative polymer

Optical glasses brand Bird Eyewear has collaborated with Aquapak and ProAmpac to launch new packaging which can degrade in marine environments. The mailer bag is both water-soluble and biodegradable, minimising any negative impact on sea life. The packaging can also be recycled, and this is unmistakably the preferred outcome of the packaging after its use.  The bag is made using Aquapak’s Hydropol solution, featuring a polymer called Polyvinylalcohol (PVOH) which is hydrophilic, so it dissolves in water, turning into a harmless cloud of mass. Whilst retaining all the functionality of traditional plastic mailing bags, the Ecowrap mailer can be safely dissolved in hot water at the end of its life, be recycled, reused or utlised as a waste food bag. Plastic-free sandwich pack delivers on shelf life

UK convenience food producer and Innovation Zone members, Greencore is aiming to reverse the environmental impact of prepackaged sandwiches with a new fibre-based, plastic-free pack launch. The initiative is in collaboration with leading flexible packaging company ProAmpac and will see the packs distributed in UK supermarkets Co-op and Sainsbury’s. The initiative, which was 18 months in the making, is seen as a “world-first” for a market with a staggering estimated 600 million prepacked sandwiches consumed in the UK every year. The pack has a plastic-free window and is made entirely from paper-based material. The new pack provides the exact level of moisture resistance to ensure that the sandwiches have the same shelf life as those packaged in plastic. According to Greencore, their research has indicated that consumers find it challenging to separate the plastic film from typical sandwich packaging meaning that the packs are often not recycled even if in theory they can be.

thepackhubs-viewThe amount of paper-based sandwich skillets that are recycled remains low so this initiative is another important step in the right direction.
