What’s Your Problem?
Henry Ford once said, “If I’d asked them what they wanted, they’d have said a faster horse”. Whilst he may have been referring to the relevance of some forms of consumer research, his comment is also relevant to the challenges we face in our ideation sessions; our ability to generate great ideas can be constrained by our current view of the world. One way to overcome this, building on the ‘I Wish’ exercise, is to spend time in these sessions identifying customer problems before we look at solutions.
Henry Ford’s ‘problem’ might have been that his customers wanted to get from A to B faster. Then again, it might have been that travel meant they had to own, and look after a horse, or that only one person at a time could travel on a horse, or that if it was raining, cold or hot then travelling on a horse was somewhat uncomfortable…….. and, of course, it could have been a combination of these. Getting to the heart of the precise problem, or problems, you are going to solve will define the direction your solution takes.
