What do you wish?
It’s often tempting in a brainstorming session to dive straight into generating ideas. As business people, we are primed for action. However, the brain is not unlike any other muscle in your body (is the brain a muscle?) and benefits from a bit of warming up. We find a great way to do that, is to use the ‘I wish’ question with an ideation group: take the issue you are focussed on in your idea generation session and spend a few minutes thinking about what, if you had a magic wand and could make anything happen, you really wish your packaging could do?
The ‘I wish’ approach has another benefit. It allows us to free our minds from being too rational – how often have you found yourself coming up with a packaging idea and immediately dismissing it: “that’s not practical” or “we’d never do that around here”? When you are free to ‘wish’ for something, we find it frees the mind from many of those rational constraints.
With a few good ‘I wish’ statements to hand, you can then set about the task of creating ideas to make those wishes come true.
