#1 Coolpack allows drinkers to enjoy ice drink on the go

Leading German digestif Jägermeister is making it easier for their consumers to drink their ice cold beverage on the go with the introduction of their ‘coolpack’ packaging. The brand has created a new format for the Spanish market. The 350 ml bottle is made of PET and allows drinkers to consumer frozen liquor whilst out and about. The pack is designed to be frozen and is presented with the characteristic green colourways of the Jägermeister brand created in a shape recognisably as a traditional freezer ice pack. The resistant, rigid and reusable PET packaging is perfect for outdoor consumption and the brand is targeting festivals and open-air concerts as potential usage occasions. #2 Beer cans collated using 100% biodegradable cardboard as alternative to plastic rings

Estrella Damm is the oldest beer brand is Spain. The brand has announced that it is working to eliminate plastic rings used for their cans. The cans will be grouped with a 100% biodegradable cardboard, made with 100% natural fibres garnered from sustainably managed trees. The initiative is part of its strategic plan to strengthen its commitment to sustainability with several measures to minimize its environmental impact. Damm aims to eliminate 100% of the plastic rings that are used in all its brands in due course that would result in a reduction of more than 260 tons of plastic per annum or equivalent to 89 million plastic rings. #3 Ryegrass-based egg box launched with 100% recycled fibre label

UK retailer Waitrose & Partners is making its egg boxes more sustainable with the introduction of a new 100% post-consumer recycled fibre carton label. The initiative helps moves the premium supermarket towards their commitment of making all their own-label packaging recyclable, reusable or home compostable by 2023. The new labels switches from 100% virgin paper for their egg boxes and will save an estimated 30 tonnes of paper each year. The egg boxes use packaging made from ryegrass and recycled paper and were the first in the UK when announced in the Innovation Zone at launch Egg boxes made from ryegrass and recycled paper is a UK first.  The packaging protects the contents like a traditional egg box, but is produced using 60% less water. It releases 10% less CO2 compared to a standard pulp egg box and also saves around 77 tonnes of wood and recycled paper each year. Waitrose Duchy Organic eggs will make the switch first with other egg ranges to follow.

#4 Spill-proof pack for patient care ready for roll out

Innovation experts The Barton Group have previously developed an easy dispensing SqueezyStraw Dispensing Pouch beverage pack featured in the Innovation Zone. See Single-serve pouch with its own built-in, integral sipping straw. The business has continued to create new functional applications for the pack format. It has announced a new variant SqueezySureSip Dispensing pouch for in-patient beverage applications.  The SqueezySureSip provides virtually spill-proof packaging for patient beverages such as juices and milk as well as food items such as puddings and yogurts. It requires no spoon, cup or straw. The SqueezySureSip built-in dispensing channel is seen as a low-cost alternative to prefilled dispensing pouches. The pouch can be designed to be frozen and can be microwaved and has tamper evident functionality.  The business now has eight U.S. patents available for licensing. It is available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes.
