#1 Cleaning service launched to trial food delivery container reuse

Leading online food delivery company Deliveroo is taking on the challenge of the amount of packaging waste the fast-growing online delivery industry generates with a trial of a food container reuse service.  An innovative new model in the battle against single use plastic has linked up with Oxford, UK based eco-friendly laundry and dry-cleaning platform Oxwash to launch a cleaning service for their takeaway packaging. Trials taking place in the city of Cambridge as well as Oxford will see Deliveroo picking up customer containers to be washed and reused. The businesses will be using the trial period to identify the most efficient process as well as being mindful of the overall consumer experience. If successful, the service would be rolled out to more UK cities in due course. Deliveroo customers will either be able to scan a QR code found on their Deliveroo box to arrange used containers pickup or drop off the containers at easy-to-locate facilities in high-density residential areas. The trial comes following Deliveroo’s opt-in button for plastic cutlery, which resulted in a 90% drop in use globally.  EXTRA READING: See more about Deliveroo’s Sustainability Strategy. #2 Boxed poultry packaging stands out on shelf

A new range of packaging for chicken is set to break the semiotic rules of the category. The new container for the roasted chicken brand Chef Ideas has been created by La Rioja, Spain based The B: Water agency. The aperture at the front of the pack helps to display the contents and the egg-shape has been designed to symbolise where the chicken has come from. Spanish poultry meat supplier Calatayud has been designed to ensure that the packaging stands out on shelf. The box also has a useful carry handle. Chef ideas can be found in both traditional commerce stores and large supermarkets throughout Spain.

#3 Clear PET bottles designed to mimic glass dairy packaging

Global packaging giants Amcor are no strangers to the pages of the Innovation Zone with around 30 initiatives listed. Their latest packaging innovation was inspired by focus group consumer research. The results gave strong guidance to the type of packaging required for the Brazilian dairy market. The consumers showed a strong attraction to the design cues of glass dairy packaging despite the market moving predominately to HDPE format as is in the case in many other markets. The transparent format was felt to infer freshness as well as a more premium quality. Consequently, Amcor worked with Brazilian dairy brand Letti to make the conversion from HDPE to clear PET. The new bottles resemble glass in appearance and use a screw cap rather than the traditional foil seal barrier found on HDPE bottles.  The clear PET bottles allow consumers to see the dairy products before they purchase them and link the bottle transparency to freshness and a better tasting product. Leading dairy brand Letti is the first in the Brazil market to adopt transparent one-litre PET bottles for its Lettico A2 fermented milk products. Thicker wall sections help to avoid bottle deformation as well as negating the requirement for horizontal ribs in the bottle design.

#4 Partnership creates smart closure capability combats counterfeiting

Leading caps and closures manufacturer Bericap makes more than 84 billion plastics closures and dispensers each year. The business has recently announced the formation of a joint partnership with Oslo headquartered printed electronics company Thinfilm to develop and improve digital authentication capability for their caps and closures. Pharmaceutical and industrial applications are set to benefit from the tie up that will see the alliance embed chips into closures to improve brand protection and authentication.  Thinfilm’s technology and software platform combined with  Bericap’s extensive range of closures will to help thwart the rising problem of counterfeiting, refill fraud, tampering and diversion. The solutions will add a significant point of value-added differentiation to Bericap’s suite of products becoming increasingly relevant as interactive smart and anti-counterfeiting packaging solutions continue to grow. The two companies have started with the integration of NFC into injection-moulded plastics closures, enabling consumers to interact with products and ensure authenticity.
