#1 Easy to self-administer pack keeps liquids and powders separate until usage

Traditional methods of combining and preparing medicines offer a spectrum of difficulties and limitations. The current designs typically require multiple packaging components and complex multi-step mixing processes that can be complicated. It is also open to users making mistakes in terms of the exact dispensing required or even creating a wasteful mess. Australian leader in easy to use packaging technology Snapsil has taken steps to improve the situation with the development of a solution to improve the controlled self-administration of liquids, powders and solids. The EasyMix packaging concept has an enabling technology for therapies requiring easy and efficient mixing of products at the time of use. It can deliver benefits such as being easier for self-medication, increasing clinician efficiencies as well as the reduction in the use of vials, syringes and needles. Snapsil’s EasyMix enables fast and easy mixing and dispensing. the contents are kept separated until usage. It delivers easy opening with controlled dispensing. Snapsil’s easy to use packaging technology is versatile and can be customized to meet both specific product packaging requirements and functional needs.

#2 Cereal boxes designed for the blind and partially sighted starts trial

It has been estimated that over two million people in the UK live with sight loss and are unable to read information on products. Kellogg’s is trialling new limited-edition packaging for their Coco Pops brand to help the blind and partially sighted.  The newly designed boxes have been devised in conjunction with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). A trial in 60 Co-op stores will see technology implemented that allows consumers to use a smartphone to detect an on-pack code. This activates playback of important labelling and allergen information to the user.  A technology called NaviLens is being used on food packaging for the first time having already been used to help visually impaired people navigate some Spanish city’s transport systems. If the trial is successful, Kellogg’s plans to embrace the technology for more of its cereal boxes. The World Sight Day Coco Pops cereal boxes are also embossed with braille and all the on-pack information is in a much larger font size. The trial was precipitated after research from RNIB exposed that 90% of blind and partially sighted people believe that information on food packaging is difficult or impossible to read. See also QR code Narrative Label uses 30 second audio clips and large-sized images for visually impaired.

#3 Refill snap lid makes process easy as well as fun

Alpla Group has 20,900 employees across 46 countries. The business produces plastic packaging across the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, oil and lubricant, home and beauty care industries. The family-owned company has introduced a new refill packaging solution for concentrated cleaning chemicals. The market is shifting to concentrated formats (without water in the supply chain), which can be more cost-effective and environmentally viable. This has seen a swathe of refillable packaging innovations coming to market. Alpla’s NOW solution is safe and easy to use and is also reported to be fun for consumers to use. The initiative consists of a small bottle with liquid concentrate. NOW is lightweight weighing only 10 grams when filled with 80 millilitres, approximately half the weight of comparable competitor products for concentrates. Compared to containers for conventional cleaning products, the packaging solution saves more than 80% of the material that would otherwise be used. It has been calculated that 200,000 refill containers can be carried by a single-vehicle reducing transportation costs by up to 90%.  The spray bottles can be reused multiple times. Recycled HDPE can be used to manufacture the refill container. See also At-home refill system shakes up cleaning spray market.

#4 Date brand switches to packaging made from recycled green PET bottles

Oxnard, California-based PinnPACK is a subsidiary of CarbonLITE Holdings, the world’s largest recycler of PET beverage containers. They have been developing PET sourced from green bottles for the past four years. The recycling advancement sees the most popular brand of dates in the US switch to thermoformed tubs and lids made from recycled green PET bottles. Packer of Medjool dates, Datepac has switched from clear virgin plastic PET to 100% post-consumer green PET from beverage bottles. PinnPACK Green recycled PET containers are supplied in 12oz (341 g) and 2-pound (907 g) sizes. The thermoformed tubs and lids are sourced from green PET bottles from leading brands such as Sprite, 7-UP as well as other green-coloured beverage products. Green-coloured recycled plastics have struggled to find a home due to a lack of demand. Consumers are used to seeing clear plastic packaging where they can clearly see the contents. It means less plastic in the landfill and less use of virgin plastic. A printed label tells the story of the packaging’s recycled content. The green coloured rPET is moulded without any dyes and remains the same hue as the incoming bottles. The green rPET container can be recycled but is dependent on the capabilities of the recycling plant in any given area. PinnPack also uses the green-coloured rPET materials to manufacture salad bowls for restaurant chain Health Nut.

#1 Flexible paint pack has host of functional advantages

A new pack format has been introduced for the paint market that promises increased consumer convenience as well as some sustainability advantages. Smart Bottle is a licensed Dow solution that is licensed worldwide as is part of its PacXpert range. The Smart Bottle is available from in a range of liquid packaging sizes from 1 gallon (4.54 litres) to 5 (22.7 litres). It does not need a box around it to stand up and can stand on its own even when almost empty.  The paint Smart Bottle is an alternative to the normal cube design.  The Smart Bottle is part of Weaverville, North Carolina based KRW Packaging Machinery offerings. KRW makes the Smart Bottles as well as the Smart Bottle machinery. KRW made the paint can replacement for Canadian Tire Stores that sells the paint in their stores across Canada. Take a look at a short demo video of the solution.  See also Easy to pour plastic paint container challenges metal can dominance.

#2 Tube range made from 95% post-consumer and 5% post-industrial recycled aluminium

Tubex has been manufacturing aluminium tubes for more than 70 years. It has tapped into that experience with a bold and differentiated aluminium tube introduction. The initiative is claimed to be the world’s most sustainable aluminium tube. Tubex’s blue tube offering is made of 100% recycled aluminium using a specially developed alloy. Blue tube closes the circular material loop by bringing post-consumer and post-industrial waste back into tube production. The new tube offers the same product features and characteristics as conventional aluminium tubes. The new tubes are constructed from 95% post-consumer and 5% post-industrial recycled aluminium and delivers reductions in CO2 emissions of 40%. This ensures that the new solution has a significantly smaller carbon footprint than traditional aluminium tubes. The recycling process uses 95% less energy than primary production.

#3 Home compostable potato packaging is an Irish retail first

Aldi continues to work on its global plastic reduction programme, which aims to ensure all of its own-label packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2022. This target is three years ahead of the UK and USA Plastic Pact pledges. To help achieve this goal, Aldi Ireland is trialling home compostable bags for Ireland’s most popular potato variety and will become the first retailer in the country to do so.  Aldi’s 1kg Irish Rooster Potatoes packaging is made from a blend of compostable materials. Customers can place the packaging in their compost heap at home instead of having to put it in the brown bin to be sent to an industrial composting facility. If the pilot is successful, the new packaging will remove five tonnes of non-recyclable plastic packaging across more than a million bags of spuds annually. Across a range of different activities, Aldi has so far removed more than 600 tonnes of plastic from its 143 Irish stores. See also Potato range gets biobased mesh solution.

#4 New polystyrene material made from up to 30% post-consumer recycled content

A global manufacturer of plastics, latex binders and synthetic rubber Trinseo has developed a new grade of post-consumer recycled polystyrene (r-PS) in combination with Meinerzhagen headquartered German thermoplastic packaging manufacturer Fernholz. The new polystyrene material in development is based on 20%-30% post-consumer recycled content (PCR), which will help to conserve resources and reduce oil consumption. The solution gives dairy product brand owners food-compliant r-PS options. Trinseo’s technology embeds the material into the polymerization process using solvent processes. The r-PS solution can be processed on established form fill seal (FFS) machinery thus eliminating the need for costly equipment upgrades. The new material grade is being piloted by a number of European dairy companies. Trinseo has the capacity to supply several thousand tons of the material in the dairy industry. The lid or label can be safely separated as part of the recycling process.

#1 Perfume bottle designed for dual usage occasions

Aptar Beauty + Home has partnered with Japanese multinational personal care company Shiseido to create a new solution for the dispensing of perfumes. Issey Miyake’s L’Eau d’Issey now features a unique and versatile bottle offering two formats in one. A standard at-home ‘prestigious’ format has been combined with a travel format in a single set. The 2-in-1 bottle technology is a first for the already innovative perfume industry.  The novel double pack concept is called IGO / ISTAY. The ISTAY bottle is in keeping with the existing L’Eau d’Issey fragrance bottle design. The light and unbreakable IGO cap can be used out of the home and contains 20ml of fragrance and an integrated vaporizer. It clips to the ISTAY base to offer a travel format and can be used completely independently.

#2 World’s first unlimited returnable container subscription

A world first is being claimed with the introduction of an unlimited returnable container subscription for the food takeaway industry. The Innovation Zone has tracked several returnable containers schemes seemingly encouraged by a shift in consumer behaviour due to Covid-19 lockdown restrictions. The solution by barePack is claimed to be a practical service to make the takeaway food market more sustainable. It does away with single-use disposable packaging and allows for takeaways to be used on demand without consumers having to plan ahead to bring their own containers. Consumers can check out reusables from partner vendors and return reusables to any participating drop site using the GO Box app. barePack is a returnable container system that gives operators the opportunity to offer a more sustainable way to deliver takeaway. Each vendor is assigned a unique QR code, used by customers to check out their reusables. Vendors can simply self-select what containers or cups they wish to stock. barePack delivers an initial stock of clean reusables, deposit-free. Customers must have a barePack subscription and use the barePack app to borrow reusables. barePack staff regularly check where stock levels are to help re-adjust stock levels in the market. #3 QR code Narrative Label uses 30 second audio clips and large-sized images for visually impaired

There are almost two million people living in the UK with sight loss and around 360,000 of those are registered as blind or partially sighted. An Italian start-up has developed a new initiative for food labels to help the visually-impaired understand vital pack information as well as be able to engage with a brand. An inclusive packaging solution sees the development of a QR code prototype. When the code is scanned on a pack it narrates olive oil packaging labels on a user’s smartphone. The “Narrative Label” uses a 30-second audio recording alongside a range of large-sized images, text and videos to detail the product contents. Sistemi e Servizi di Precisione (SISSPre) start-up has developed the QR code prototype, which is compatible with both Android and iOS systems. It is being trialed with 20 local businesses to test usability and user acceptance. The Narrative Label needs to be merely scanned for it to generate its contents. The content can be constantly updated by the brand owner without needing to change the QR code on the pack. Braille labeling on-pack can be cost-prohibitive.

#4 Glue-free wooden cap features removable plastic inner for recycling

Wood packaging specialists Pujolasos delivers innovations to enhance sustainable perfume and cosmetic packaging. The Barcelona-based business has announced the introduction of a glue-free wooden cap, which has a removable and recyclable plastic inner, a first of its kind. The removable plastic inner means that it can be easily recycled post-use. Also made available is a mono-material threaded wooden cap. The recently developed patented wooden cap – the Woodle tackles the ongoing challenge of multi-material component recycling. The plastic inner is designed to be easily removed and then recycled after its useful life. Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastic can also be incorporated to further enhance environmental credentials. The innovation is compatible with the majority of existing and potential perfumery and cosmetics packaging developments.

#1 Recycled food grade soft plastic packaging is a cheese market first

According to the 2019 UK Household Plastic Collection Survey, just over 5% of soft plastic is collected to be recycled into new material and that is non-food grade only. UK supermarket leaders Tesco plan to change that with the introduction of the first recycled food-grade soft plastic packaging from materials returned by their customers. A trial will see the retailer’s own label cheese brand use the recycled packaging via their supplier Bradburys. It will contain a minimum of 30% recycled material. Recycling collection points specifically for soft plastics were introduced in 10 south-west Tesco stores with a view to identifying ways to create a closed-loop recycling system. The material is sent to London-based leading chemical recycling company Plastic Energy. They used packaging is converted into oil through pyrolysis. This recycled oil is then used by SABIC in their production process to make new plastic pellets. Sealed Air produced the new packaging for seven different cheese variants. Work is ongoing to access scalability.

#2 Market leader makes snack tube switch to improve recycling

It has been estimated that three million Pringles tubes are sold every day across Europe. The distinctive pack is being re-designed due to it being very hard to recycle. The composition of the ubiquitous tube is complex comprising of a metal base, metal tear-off freshness lid, foil-lined cardboard sleeve topped off with a plastic cap. The combination of these materials is necessary to maintain a 15-month shelf life but makes it impossible to recycle through existing waste systems. New packs have been developed and are being tested in selected Tesco stores and made of 90% paper. The rest is made of polyAl (PE and aluminium combination) plastic barrier to protect the contents against both oxygen and moisture. Both recyclable plastic and paper lid options are also on trial.  Both will still produce the distinctive ‘pop’ sound strongly associated with the brand.  The new designs have been in development for a year. See also Introduction of 100% recyclable own-label crisp tube is a UK retailer first.

#3 Easy opening pack allows for controlled dispense and accurate dosing

Forest Glenn, Queensland-based Snapsil Corporation is an Australian leader in easy to use packaging technology. They have developed a distinctive and innovative new way to open medical devices with ease. Their patented technology for the Centre Snap Powder pack is most suitable for medical and pharmaceutical applications for easy opening, controlled dispense and accurate dosing. Suitable for powdered products, the pack design makes it easy for consumers to check for any residual powder that might be left to help reduce product wastage and ensure all is used.  It offers a one-stop continuous dispense and delivers excellent and efficient evacuation of product. The pack is small and easy to carry making it perfect for on-the-go usage. The easy to open pack is available in a range of customizable shapes and sizes.

#4 Paper beverage packaging testing switches to vodka bottles

Absolut Company is examining alternative to glass bottle formats with the announcement that it is testing a small quantity of paper-based bottles. The activity is part of its collaboration with Paboco, a joint venture between Swedish pulp and paper manufacturer BillerudKorsnäs and bottle manufacturer Alpla Group. Paboco’s other partners include Coca-Cola, Carlsberg and L’Oréal. The first production of 2,000 prototypes will be submitted for controlled testing in Sweden and then the UK. The latest model is made from a combination of 57% paper and 43% plastic. The whole bottle is recyclable and is made of 100% recycled content.  Following initial feedback from consumers, a second pilot production run is planned. Absolut Vodka and Absolut Mixt will be the first two products tested in the paper bottles. The recycled plastic makes up the single barrier layer for the bottle, which can successfully be recycled with processing systems for this material are already in place. The next stage of development is striving towards the ultimate goal of a fully bio-based bottle.
